All of Helsinki’s libraries are open to the public. Tourists can visit a library to learn more about Helsinki’s history and culture. Most libraries also have a really good selection of literature in English and other foreign languages. Reading is not the only reason to visit one of Helsinki’s modern libraries. For instance, art lovers can stop by nearly 20 different libraries to view unique exhibitions. Each exhibition lasts one month. All of Helsinki’s libraries also offer computer workstations and complimentary wireless Internet access.

Helsinki’s Library 10 is situated inside the city’s main post office building. Here, visitors can explore Helsinki’s most extensive music collection. Guests can borrow headphones from the library to use with stationary CD players. Additional features include recording rooms, rehearsal spaces and a performance stage.

Tourists who want to learn the local language can stop by the Vuosaari Library’s Finnish Language Cafe. The Finnish Language Cafe is held every other Tuesday throughout the year. Other Finnish Language Cafes are held on Wednesdays at the Pasila and Maunula libraries.

Approximately 500 people visit the cozy Pohjois-Haaga’s library each day. This colorful library is only 347 square meters, but is still one of the best meeting places in the neighborhood. The building was once a grocery store, and was fully renovated in 2007. Pohjois-Haaga’s library prides itself on exceptional, friendly service. Dogs are allowed in this library.

Helsinki began planning their next library in 2010. The design of the building will be chosen from the 2012 International Architecture Competition. Construction on Helsinki’s Central Library is scheduled to begin in 2014, with a grand opening planned for 2017. The Central Library is expected to have more than 1.5 million visitors each year.
